Colby – “Up until 2 weeks ago we hadn’t won a game all season and we didn’t give a damn, we just love turning up every week, training and playing. Blanca? caught her first ‘out’ a couple of weeks ago!” “How do you spell that? “Just o u t!” hahahahahahahahaha “Oh sorry, I’m very literal…Can You put that in?” “That is definitely going in” “B l a n c a !. The team is all about people who don’t have to be good at sports, it’s just being part of the team, building confidence etc.”
Tree – “ The team is about people who haven’t been sports people in their lives and haven’t been given the opportunity to be part of a team. I tried when I was younger but didn’t fit in so this is amazing for me to be doing sport. When I got kicked out when I was younger I decided sport was really daggy and then some people asked me join the softball team and I’m like ‘That is so daggy’ and now I don’t think I could live without it. I will be playing with my zimmer frame, no question! Softball is the coolest thing ever.
When we won two weeks ago I don’t think we were more excited because we are so excited anyway, we’re famous for being happy. I can hear the dugouts and I could hear the other team saying..’well their not very good at this and not very good at that but their sooo happy.’ We told everyone to come , we even told the butcher.”
Blanca – “Most of us are dykes, actually Colby is the only non homo but she says she’s a homo sapien. I think we’re the only gay sports team, well softball team at least. Tree’s girlfriend Alex is their number one fan and was the only fan there to cheer them on when they won their only game.”
Alex says – “ I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a joyous, inclusive, fun sporting team ever and about 40 people came and saw them play the other day and the reverberation of joy that came out of the community that came to watch and support them was fantastic. It”s because of the way the team operates, it’s really infectious, everyone wants to participate in it even though they’re not playing.”
Blanca – “We have a great coach and she comes along and tries to turn this Motley crew into something tangible, she’s so positive even if you get out in one she’ll high five you when you get back to the dugout. The whole point is to give it a go.”
Tree -” Key ingredient is we’re not allowed to know the score, it’s not important. We are there to play sport. I think that sets a good scene particularly for our team and our winning streak of One. You know we’re not spending the whole game going.. ‘aww their ahead of us by twelve points.”
Colby – “None of us are very good but the commotion that comes out of our dugout when we get to first base is monumental”
