Susie – Part 3

“ I’m going to Thailand at the end of the month and then I’m going to live in India for 6 months.

I need a bigger life. I’m building a little house in Eltham so I will finish it and then I will rent it out for the 6 months. I don’t want Winter.

I bought a little shop and we called it Closet Queens in Kings Cross. Sarah was still very Gothic and she worked in the shop. It was right next door to a pub called The Soho and she ended up working on the door of Soho on their Gothic nights. It was there she met her partner Pete. He was from Wollongbar so there you go, it went full circle. I’d taken her away and now they are back here with their little family.

I sold the shop and I moved to Brisbane. I’d always had a terrible relationship with my mother and I thought if she died and me being an only child I’d feel awful and guilty. It’s all about me. I moved to Brisbane to live with her and it didn’t work out. .

I met Billy in the early days of internet, MSN. I was sharing a house with a girlfriend and she was on it all the time so all these blokes would come to the house. We had so much fun. She loaded up a profile on me without my knowledge. I had been on my own for 10 years at this point and perfectly happy. I would come home and check the net and would have 43 guys wanting to meet. Delete, delete, delete. A lot of these guys in their photos are holding fish, seriously, holding a fish or leaning against a Porsche. You know its not their car.

I saw this guy who had taken a selfie with his glasses on and he had a motorbike which I liked. I was the first response he’d had. I think we were just too lazy, he’ll do, she’ll do. That was 15 years ago. He was very different to me but we had lots of wonderful adventures on the bike. He’d been married twice. Ive never married. I’ve only ever loved Danny enough to marry and he never asked. I ended up befriending Billy’s first wife because I thought it was important for their 4 kids that they start communicating. She ended up being included in our family gatherings. She was into all this wealth creation. They are like gurus, these guys. I can’t remember his name but she invited me to a seminar and this man came in to all this ACDC music.

It was a 3 day seminar and I said to Bill, I’m going to stay detached, I’m not remotely interested in this shit but I’ll go because Irene has invited me. They were all role playing and I made sure I never got a partner to role play. Sarah came the first night and she passed me a note saying, This is Hillsong Mum, See ya! It was very cultish. He kept saying the healing takes place while you sleep.

I had a job at the time working for Sofitel Hotels and I was completely burnt out. I went home at the end of the 3 days thinking that was 3 days I couldn’t get back. I went to bed and woke at 2am. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I knew I was going to open the most fabulous vintage shop in Brisbane. I wanted it to be in Paddington up on La Trobe Terrace. The other thing he kept saying was don’t worry about the money, you just have to act as if its reality. I quit my job, started looking for property to rent in Paddington with no money. This guy who owns this amazing French antique shop in Milton contacted me. He had just bought a restaurant which was an old house and he wasn’t settling for 12 months. Did I want to rent it at this incredibly cheap rate? Yes, I said but I still didn’t have any money.

Out of the blue I received a cheque from a Solicitor for $20,000 from a very wealthy Uncle who had died at least 18 months prior to that. I opened up my shop which was beautiful. After the year was up he wanted it back so I did a letterbox drop and a woman replied. Her husband had been a lawyer and a very heavy smoker so he couldn’t work in any of the buildings. He bought a house to practice out of so he could smoke. He died and she said..Do you want it? Yes please I said.”
