“ We’re doing The Shitbox Rally 2016 which goes from Mackay to Hobart. 3,700 kms but we have to drive 1200kms to Mackay from Lismore just to get there in the first place. From Mackay we travel inland through Blackall, Thargomindah, Tilpa, Cootamundra, Dargo then along the Great Ocean and across the Bass Strait to Tasmania. It will take us 2 days to get to Mackay then we have 7 days to end up in Hobart. We travel about 600kms a day and camp along the way at 7 places in our swags. There’s 231 cars and each car has 2 people. One stipulation is that all cars have to cost less than $1,000 other than the 15 support vehicles so all the cars have to be a shitbox and can’t be 4WD.
This is an event to raise money for the Cancer Council. We all have to raise a minimum of $4,000 which is an entry requirement. All teams pick a random theme and we decided to be Thunderbirds, don’t know why really. We are registered as mechanics in the rally so we will be helping out other cars. We are the Thunderbirds driving through the desert rescuing people in distress so it’s quite apt, plus our car looks a bit like Thunderbird 2. It’s going to be pretty funny, meet some interesting characters on the way and raise money for a good cause. We leave here on the 4th May.
Over the last 6 years Shitbox Rally has raised over 6 million dollars for cancer research. It’s going to be challenge, dirty, dusty and pretty tough but it’s going to be an amazing experience, that’s for sure and something we will remember forever.“
