Harold “I had a motorbike and she came to Texas in QLD. That’s where I met her. I was working hard, ringbarking, building weirs and it was very cold out there.”
Norma – “Well we got married in 1951 so we’ve been together about 65 years now.”
Harold – “We’ve lived in Ballina now about 20 years and have 7 daughters and 3 sons and we’ve got 15 granddaughters and 15 grandsons and they also have little ones, lost count.”
‘So tell me the secret of a long happy marriage?’
Norma – “Being happy, helping each other and looking after each other and trying to help other people.”
Harold – “You know you just need to be happy and be good and treat your partner good, don’t hide anything, take her in and have a cup of tea, go for walks together. What you see happening today is awful. You see on TV men punch their wives, no respect for each other, makes me sick what some of these men are like. Im 86 and Norma’s 85 but I look 18 hey!”
Norma – “and don’t be prejudiced against each other, treat each other like you would like to be treated. Be kind!”
Harold – “like that song…’Try a little kindness’, that’s a good one hey!”
‘If you had to pick one day what would be the happiest day of your lives?’
Norma – “The day we first met. ooooh yes! I remember that well.”
Harold – “Ahh Yes! I met her and thought, she’s beautiful.”
Norma – “He was so handsome..ooh yes…and still is.”
