Molly, Sarah and Lachlan AKA The Buckleys

“We have grown up in a musical family. Our dad is a musician, he used to play drums with The Radiators and he’s now a honky tonk piano player. Our Grandpa and great Uncle were Stroud piano players and way back we are related to The Buckley’s Serenaders which were travelling minstrels from New Orleans. Music is well and truly in our blood. We were never pushed into it, it’s just so in our lives. We’ve loved it as a family ever since we were little, song writing, performing, recording, all of it.”

Molly – “We are based in the Northern Rivers. We kind of moved around a bit, Sydney, Coffs and Avoca but we’ve always come home to The Northern Rivers. I’m in Year 9 at Trinity, Sarah just finished at Trinity and Lachlan goes to Byron High.”

Molly – “When I was about 8, Sarah was about 11 and she came up with this idea that she wanted to get to Nashville by the time she was 16 so we went busking in Tamworth, just anywhere we could gig and we saved all our money including Christmas money into our Nashville tin. Last year we finally saved enough to go to Nashville. We still have our tin.”

Sarah – “We didn’t know a soul but we rang up and played venues wherever we could over there. We had watched all the docos on Nashville with all the incredible artists like Faith Hill, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban who had been a part of that Nashville scene.

We ended up getting a spot at this place called Douglas Corner in Nashville which is an iconic music venue so that was exciting. There was a lady in the audience called Debbie Throckmorton who is a songwriter in Nashville. Her dad is one of country musics most iconic songwriters. He’s written for George Strait, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, all these amazing songs he’s written. She hooked us up with a bunch of incredible songwriters. We co-wrote with Bruce Channel who wrote Hey Baby (I wanna know if you’ll be my girl). Here we were in his little home with his wife. They had this 20 year old refrigerator, it was so down to earth and rootsy. We also worked with Rafe Van Hoy who is also a good friend now. He wrote Golden Ring which has been performed by Alan Jackson, Tammy Wynette, Martina McBride, George Strait and more.”

Molly – “This was our first co-write so it was pretty scary. They’re like these massive, amazing people who we grew up listening to and here we were walking into their house. We came back to Australia and signed a record deal with Golden Robot Records and they sent us back over to Nashville to write songs for an album. “

Sarah – “That’s where we found the song ‘Run’ which is our new single. This was pitched to us by Sony ATV publishing in Nashville and Mark Moffatt who is a good friend. We were a bit skeptical at first as we have never recorded a song that we didn’t write but we heard it and we loved it so much. It was perfect for us. After we recorded it we found out that it was written by Jennifer Hanson who wrote ‘Let me down easy’ by Billy Corrington which was one of our favourite songs and she also wrote Country Strong which is the theme song for the movie. We grew up listening to the songs from the movie Country Strong. All of a sudden we are singing one of her songs.”

Molly – “We are going back into the studio early next year to record an album. We are also going back to Nashville next year, playing a lot of shows and hopefully we’ll get to Tamworth as well. I play the Mandolin and I’m starting keyboards and piano. I also sing harmonies.”

Sarah – “I’m the lead singer and I play a lot of instruments but acoustic guitar is my main one on stage.

Lachlan plays electric guitar which brings a unique flavour to our sound. He’s into 70’s like the Allman Brothers, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix. He’s only been playing 2 years and he’s awesome. We are trying to convince him to sing.“

Have a listen to their new single 🙂
