” I am currently doing a PHD at Southern Cross University looking at the experience of cage diving with great white sharks at the Neptune Islands in South Australia, so while I’m down there I go out with the cage diving operators and talk to the divers about their experience and try and gauge whether their experience can help aid the conservation of sharks. When there’s room in the cage I jump in which is most times and we get to go in the surface cages and we also get to go in the bottom cage which go down to about to about 25 metres and you can have half a dozen great whites come around, we open the bait bin and they come in close which is really exciting. The biggest one I’ve seen is about 4 1/2 to 5 metres. They don’t seem to look much longer but they get a lot bigger so when your in the bottom cage and a shark that big goes over the top of you it is just a spiritual experience, it’s amazing!”
