“ I have lived on Keen St near the baseball fields, or should I say softball fields, (Go Divas!) since I bought a little old cottage in 2002. I bought her from a friend and my partner and I bought the owners car too! All the neighbours knew, was there were 2 new girls in the house driving the same car.
I had no idea when I left the big city of Sydney that life would be so easy living in Lismore. I had no idea until a friend pointed it out to me that in fact, the whole world is on Keen St! Everything you would ever need is on Keen St and I’ve even met famous people on Keen St!
I am the unofficial Town Crier of Lismore. I was told by a reliable source, Val Axtens, that in fact Lismore did have a Town Crier and they walked the length of Keen St to announce the daily news and important events. I have walked the length of Keen St so many times over the last decade and it is definitely the hub of the town. I often thought if I was blind it would be fine because everything I need is in a straight line!
You can watch a movie, have a drink, go to a restaurant, buy clothes, do your grocery shopping, buy a bevy or a book, do a class at the Con, see your doctor, take your dog to the vet, have a facial, get your bike fixed and buy a peace sign sticker for your kombi van! It’s amazing!
When I decided to try and play a team sport well clearly basketball or softball were great options – on Keen St.
A few years ago my flatmate was asked to do a photo shoot for the Lismore Roller Derby girls with Suzie Quatro! I insisted she needed an assistant and went along for the ride. I saw ‘Boney M’ at the same venue, on Keen St, and almost got kicked out for dancing on the table. I was in my late 30’s!
And this year the council, in its creative wisdom, installed the best recycled Christmas tree that has made us famous around the world – on Keen St! I have recently moved up the hill to Lismore Heights, 4 weeks ago, gee you get a breeze up there, but I will always cherish my time on Keen St in the wok. Hear ye here ye the whole world really is on Keen St!”
