“I started a little 3 piece band with my brother and a drummer called Project Winterhaven.”
L – “They were a great band. Julz was still playing with them when we met so I would go and watch them.”
J-“My brother and I moved to London for a couple of years so when I moved back, we didn’t plan to have a long hiatus but my brother had the chance to go to Brazil to hang out with his now wife. As a sister I was like …That’s amazing, go to Rio but as a band member I was saying… Don’t go! They’ve been together for 16 years so that worked.”
L-“After 10 years of being on the road you work out what you want to do, the people that you want to surround yourself with and the type of musicyou w ant to play. You essentially cut out all the bullshit and keep going.
I didn’t really live anywhere for ages. We spent a lot of time in the Northern Rivers over the years. Tracy, our bass player was living in Eltham and we’d come down and play Kyogle. This is home for me. I don’t differentiate between the coast and the hinterland. As soon as I’m in this area I feel home. All of your person is just comfortable.
I’d never had interest in owning property. I never thought it would happen to me because I’ve chosen this life. I know lots of people who have very full lives who aren’t property owners. A friend shared something on FB about properties in Tassie for $5,000 and I thought let’s work it out and do it then I’d think that’s a silly idea. Every now and then I would scroll through Real Estate sites and look for properties under $100k. This property came up on Bangalow Rd near Boatharbour on the river. It’s flood zone but it’s beautiful. I showed Julz, it’s 5 acres, pine trees, a little shack on the river.”
J-“Lisa said, I think I’ve found our studio! She showed me and I think we probably had $3 in our bank accounts. Enough for a front door mat. We were going on tour and I always went to visit my grandparents before we left. I went to sushi with my mum and her mum and I told them about the property which I think was advertised for $130K. A cabin on 5 acres on the river. My Grandma offered to help us get the loan. We were leaving in 2 hours so we said goodbye and jumped on a plane to Germany. Mum took a real interest in it and went to look at it for us.”
L-“We still rent a place in Burleigh but the cost of living compared to Lismore is about a 30% difference. That’s our social, family catch up time and here is our recover, chill and play music time. We actually bought it when we were in Berlin and when we came home it was 4 days before the settlement date. The first time we saw the property we owned it. Julz’s mum put so much effort into organising everything. The cabin is our studio. It’s sort of like glamping. A lot of our area is living outside which is stunning in Summer. When we are home I get to play in the garden and it’s so fertile. The big flood last year came 30 cm into our studio. We lost heaps of stuff including 2 beautiful guitars but we knew when we bought it that we were in a flood zone. We bought the property off Janelle Saffin and James Gallagher. They are our neighbours and we are great mates.”
J-“They are the best neighbours.”
L-“Julz is producing an album at the moment for country singer Beccy Cole and then we have the Lismore gig tonight at City Hall. We then head off to open the ski season on Perisher, next is Melbourne then Adelaide until we go to the states on the 4th July. We are over there for 2 months.”
We’ve been in and out of Lismore. My dad Ron Gentz owned the Shell service station at Lismore Heights for 15 years and I worked there when I was in high schools back in the day of service. Mum owned a dress shop in Wigmore Arcade in Ballina and she had the best gossip because it was quite high end, all the Australian designers so all the ladies who lunched bought their clothes from her.
I wouldn’t change anything about how we live but you have to keep moving so much and I have this huge yearning to be more involved in community here because I love it so much. All of the community events that we’ve been involved with have been so incredible. We did the Dirt Girl project with Kate and Huey just down the road in Whiporie. Last night we played with Cecilia Brandolini and she is extraordinary, another incredible local talent. This area breeds creativity. This whole area is so magic.”
