“I’m from Kempsey originally, have had several businesses. I think Australia needs a good strong leader at the moment, I liked Menzies he was a good leader.
I started at the crossing there on the corner at the cathedral in Dawson St and was there for 6 years. I then moved to this crossing 19 years ago after Mr Austin Gooley passed away.
I am very happy with life and I’m very very happy with the children. I had my 25 year award celebration and 2,000 people came. I got a standing ovation led by year 11 and 12 that went for 2 minutes. Those kids have known me since they were in kindergarten.
I’m very good at my signals because I learned to drive when there were no indicators on the cars and signals were the most important thing which my dad taught me well. The teachers and the children and the drivers all say I do very good signals and I’m very proud of that.
I think I’ll last till the 30 years, I’ll be 83 on the 17th January. The children told me when I turned 80 that I only looked 66 and I’m pleased to do a job that I really like and I’m very pleased that the schools, Trinity and St Carthage’s have good discipline and the children are all well mannered and respectful and I’m very proud of the school. When the little ones start I get them all to call me George because that’s my name and the kids like it. They say “that’s our George’ and I like that.
I wish everyone the best and you know mentally I could go on forever but physically I think Ive got another 2 and a half years.
I better go! my wife has to get to bingo. I’ll be in trouble! She’s been playing bingo with the same three ladies for 30 years. I’m very happy I have a good wife and a good family.”
