“I work at The Casino Neighbourhood Centre as the Intake Officer and at the moment there is an ‘Adopt a Family’ appeal that is organised to brighten the lives of families facing adversity at Christmas. The Brighter Futures program is run through Casino Neighbourhood Centre and thankfully we have had all our families adopted this year in Casino but there are still 70 families throughout the region that are still waiting to be adopted and we only have till 5pm this afternoon to register.
It’s a service that’s run through The Northern Star and it’s called ‘Adopt a Family’ at Christmas and nominated local charities and community look out for local families facing serious financial hardship or social isolation and often through no fault of their own so it’s a chance for community members and businesses to give a little support to these families so they have a bit of spirit in their Christmas.
People can contact Lismore Soup Kitchen, Caspa, Northern Rivers Community Gateway, Challenge, Wesley Mission, Mental Health Support Group and Byron Bay Community and in todays Northern Star on page 12 there are contact numbers and you can see families that still need adopting whether it be a mum and 2 children or a dad and his son. You select the family you would like to adopt and can share with your workmates or friends.
You have to register today by 5pm but you can bring in your donated goods whether it be food hampers or presents afterward. The look on the faces and the tears when they receive a gift is a pretty awesome feeling to be able to give that to someone. It helps make their Christmas a little bit happier. There’s limited funding available to purchase Christmas hampers or provide food this year with our service so to be able to be hooked up with the “Adopt a Family’ program means we are able to support families that desperately need it.”
