“Im excited about this coming summer…in the hope that I can have a cordless baby to take swimming at the beach. My daughter, Drew, was born with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. She spent her first 4 months fighting for her life in Paediatric Intensive Care at the Mater in Brisbane. They say your kids save your life, and ironically she saved my life and I saved her life. Every waking minute I sat by her bedside in ICU whilst she squeezed my finger, holding on for her life. There came a point where we were worried for her quality of life and so the question was raised “Are we playing God by using medicine, surgery and constant intervention to keep Drew alive?” It was a question I mulled over and over. And so we were faced with the decision, do we push on and keep intervening knowing that she may not have quality of life, or do we simply let her go. After pondering for a few days, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to give Drew every chance to fight on. Not long after, she turned a corner, she soared, she grew stronger and stronger. Now its hard to believe she was ever that sick, she’s such a happy, vibrant and content baby. So, her little lungs will be assessed at the end of October to decide whether she can breathe on her own without the extra support of oxygen…and fingers crossed we will have a cordless baby for the summer to take swimming. What a momentous occasion that will be.”
