Basil – “ I am a long term Lismore Organic Market enthusiast. I’m actually a mulch and organic pest control consultant to our local organic growers. I’m trying to expand my circle of friends so I have devised a plan and as Lismore being the friendliest place in the world, this should be easy.
Lismore Organic Market is turning 20 years old and there is going to be a great event on the 1st of October from 7.30am – 12 noon including a Scarecrow competition. I am so happy because I might even find myself a mate. It gets lonely sometimes standing in the garden all day and night. Occasionally a brave bird will land on me and have a chat but most are scared of me. I think I have a beautiful smile and I try to look as friendly as I can but it doesn’t work. My job is to protect the garden but I would love some friends. I did win an award once for being Outstanding in my Field but hay I don’t like to brag.
The Lismore Organic Market has been going since 1999 at the Lismore Showgrounds. It’s Lismore’s best kept secret. I get to go sometimes and it’s a lovely market with loyal customers. I know many by name. There is a real sense of community and it’s a meeting place every Tuesday morning.
On the day of the event we will have about 17 guest stall holders coming to share the day. They are all local growers, artists and makers. There will be plants, pecans, pottery, permaculture, flowers and fungi, cookbooks, ceramics, chocolate, cheese, bread, jewellery and garden beds. There’ll be heaps of music, tea, coffee and cakes. We are really lucky as we have the wonderful chef Sam Wise from the Dusty Attic. She cooks breakfast for us every Tuesday though I’m on straw diet at the moment so I just have to enjoy the aroma. Sam will have her stall with all her yummy, fermented products as well. We also have Ali who has been a stall holder since the market started and she makes delicious cakes. We also have Barbara coming who is an expert of Native Solitary bees and she will tell us how to create habitat and how to care for them. She’ll have hive building kits to. It’s going to be the best day.
There will be a children’s art exhibition so kids up to that age of 12 can enter their art pieces and 13 pieces will be selected for the market calendar. If you want to enter the Art competition or the Scarecrow competition, all the info is on the Lismore Organic Market Facebook page (link below).
It would be the last straw if you don’t come.”
