Aggie, Tilly and Tandy

Aggie lives in Brisbane and comes down regularly to visit her cousin Tilly who lives in Casino and Tandy in Lismore. Tandy moved to Lismore in January this year and Tilly has lived in Casino for 30 years and feel blessed to be living in this area. “We go home to Papua New Guinea sometimes.Tilly has just been and Aggie is going home in 10 days to see her family. “We come from a volcanic town called Rabaul. In 1994 the town had twin volcanic eruptions which made thousands of people homeless and had to be resettled on land inland, many kilometres away from their original villages, which were on the coast. Tilly and Aggie lost their village which was right in the path of the molten lava flows. Their people had to be relocated; it was like moving from Evans Head to Woodenbong, Tilly said. Our people used to depend on the sea for their livelihood. Most of our town was destroyed and the main centre had to be relocated to Kokopo about 20 kilometres southeast of Rabaul town. But there were no casualties, and everyone was transported to safety. Tilly and Aggie’s people were stuck for three days before they were transported out by boat, as the road out of their village was covered by lava and ash. One of the volcanoes is still active today; it last erupted two months ago.”
