Ada Sweetwater

‘Ada Sweetwater was one of the first little humans I interviewed over 5 years ago. I met her and her Mum downtown and have featured her over those years on HOL. She’s a thoughtful, compassionate little human who cares deeply for our world.’

Ada – “I’m 8 years old now and I’m in 2S at Wyrallah Road Public School. I love nature and playing outside. I play piano and I like doing English and Maths. Did you see our garden? We planted Sweetpeas and they are blooming.

I’m fundraising for girls in Uganda and Sierre Leone. Basically we are raising funds so the girls in these countries can go to school. Usually only the boys get to go to school there. The girls get left at home to do the housework. This will help the girls get an education. They can go to high school and university and become independant women.

I’ve already raised almost $100. My target is $300 which will pay for one girl to go to school for a whole year. If I raise more then I might be able to help another girl go to school as well.

The money helps to support them as well. They have to stay home to do the housework because the family is struggling. The money helps the family too because that’s a big issue.

It’s not fair that the boys can go to school and have more chances than the girls.

They have sent me a dress from their country but the mail is slow so I haven’t received it yet. I’m supposed to wear that dress while I’m fundraising.

We got the idea from Kirsten at Laklak because her daughter was doing it. We buy lots of birthday presents for people from her shop.

I won a public speaking competition last week. My speech was on why I think nature is amazing. There was 17 people in the competition. I was meant to be Dirtgirl in my school play but it got cancelled because of Covid so I used the opening line to begin my speech…. ‘Hello world, it’s Dirtgirl here and we’re gonna get grubby.”
